The damage to a firebox can be devastating. Concerns of toxic fumes in your home to a chimney fire. The firebox is an important part of the fireplace and chimney. Its benefits are many, but primarily it is to contain a fare safely in the fireplace. The firebox can sustain very high temperatures which will protect the surrounding walls. Also protecting combustible materials from the high degree of heat. The firebox also plays a role in ensuring that smoke is properly directed up the chimney through the flue liner.

Over time with the use of the fireplace, the firebox may be subject to cracks. It doesn’t matter if you have a brick-and-mortar firebox or a refractory panel one, it will deteriorate with age. Causes of Cracks and How To Avoid Them?

  • The most common cause of cracks or damage to your firebox is age. The wear and tear that the firebox sustains regularly can be brutal on your entire fireplace and chimney. Depending on how often you use your fireplace will depend on the wear.
  • Fireplace construction. Not often but there are times that the fireplace was not built properly. If so, you are more susceptible to damage such as cracks in the firebox.
  • Water damage. Damage to your firebox due to water getting in is common. Once the water starts to seep in, chances are it will find a small crack and the process begins.
  • Thermal shock. This is when your firebox sustains a drastic temperature difference. If you start a fire too quickly it will cause this shock to the firebox and chimney. Another shock to the system is if you pour cold water on a fire or hot coals.
