Fireplace & Chimney Dampers: An Overview of the Two Damper Styles

Dampers are important for safe and efficient fireplace operation. Chimney Solutions of Indianapolis, IN, would like to share some helpful information about fireplace dampers and chimney dampers and the benefits they provide.

Fireplace damper or “throat damper”

This is the most common style of damper. It’s made of an adjustable metal plate and is situated just above the fireplace’s firebox. You control a throat damper with a lever-and-pulley system.

Chimney damper or “top-mount damper”

As the name implies, these dampers are mounted at the top of the chimney over the flue opening and are beneficial in several ways (see below).

A damper’s main job

The key to a good and safe wood fire is ventilation. Fire needs air to start and continue, and that’s where the damper comes in. When fully open, both damper styles encourage air to enter the fireplace and flow through the log stack, providing the fire with the oxygen it needs.

The draft not only helps with the fire, but it also carries smoke up and out of the chimney. A sluggish draft can allow smoke and deadly carbon monoxide to move into a home’s living spaces. Drafts can be hindered by:

  • Tree debris clogging the mesh of the chimney cap
  • A flue that’s full of creosote, tree debris, and animal nests
  • A flue that’s incorrectly sized for the fireplace
  • A damper that isn’t able to open wide enough

An additional benefit of a throat damper

Chimney flues can be smelly, particularly if they aren’t cleaned out regularly. The main cause is built-up creosote, which emits a strong, smoky odor. A closed throat damper helps keep chimney smells out of your home.

An additional benefit of a top-mount damper

In addition to regulating airflow during a fire, top-mount dampers provide a protective shield against rain, tree debris, and small animals. Rain intrusion can cause widespread water damage throughout the chimney system. Tree debris can block the draft. Some small animals build nests, which can create blockages and odors.

Which damper is right for you?

Either damper style, if made right and installed correctly, will serve you well. Throat dampers are typically included in new home construction and when building a fireplace and chimney from scratch. Top-mount dampers are frequently added when a throat damper finally wears out.

If you have a throat damper, you can install a top-mount damper to replace it or work in conjunction with it. Two things to keep in mind should you go this route:

  1. You’ll need to check the top damper for debris clogging its mesh regularly
  2. You’ll have two dampers to remember to open during a fire and close afterward
