Can Chimneys Get Repaired In The Winter?
In each situation, there is an ideal choice and a “have to” choice. During the winter months, homeowners call one of our Chimney Solutions team members because they’ve discovered an issue with their chimney during normal use. Almost without question, they ask us if they can get their chimney repaired in the winter or if they’ll need to stop using it until the spring. Today, we’re going to unpack the nuanced answer to that question.
Masonry and cold weather
Until recently, it was almost impossible to repair a chimney in cold weather. The materials most masons used weren’t receptive to cold weather. If you need a good visual example, picture laying tar when it’s cold outside vs 90 degrees. It may be hotter when it’s 90, but the tar will spread easier and adhere to the surface much better. Masonry is no different. Typically, even with newer masonry mixes, winter chimney repair will require tarps and portable heaters to bond properly.
The best time to repair a chimney
Can you get your chimney repaired in the winter? Technically, yes, but it’s not ideal. As we’ve already unpacked, building materials bond more effectively in warm weather. Masonry adheres to brick much easier when it’s above 40 degrees. That’s where working with your Chimney Solutions technician can develop both long-term and temporary solutions. As many of you know, we had a relatively warm Christmas in 2021. While January has been much colder, it’s not unheard of for 60 degree days mid-month. You may be able to schedule winter repairs during those warmer days. However, if we hit a long, cold streak, and your chimney is more of a luxury than a necessity, the better time to fix it will be in the late spring to early summer. That will give ample time for the brick to warm up, for the sun to do its job, and for you to budget appropriately if the damage is extensive.
Proactive inspections of your chimney
Most homeowners don’t think about their chimney until fall or winter and they’re ready to light a fire for the first time. By then, it can be challenging to schedule an inspection and (depending on the weather) more difficult to repair. A better solution is to have annual inspections of your chimney in late spring or early summer. Your tech can let you know of any problems, if you should schedule a follow-up visit in the late summer, and the cost for necessary repairs at that time.
